Hi tonycbooth, I can only give you some healthy information if you submit your nationality and whereabouts you want to live in Cyprus. IF you are an EU citizen, then you do not need a visa and a working permit to live and work in south Cyprus. But if you are intending to move to north Cyprus, then still you do not need a visa, but I think you will have to get a working permit, which is easily given. There are five uni's in north, so your wife can find a job. I hope this helps.

Hi Garbistch

That is not quite correct, even EU citizens require an Alien Card to remain here more than 3 months, they also need to register with Immigration to work, as well of course with Social Security for contributions and the Dpartment of Finance for taxation.

Well that's what I thought, because that was the regulation between original 15 member states of the EU.

Procedures for EU National wishing to work in Cyprus:

Nationals from member states have the right to enter Cyprus by simply showing a valid EU passport or ID Card without having to register upon arrival.

If there is an intention to stay and take up employment one has to:

a) apply within 8 days for an Alien Registration Certificate (ARC) at the local Immigration Branch of the Police (issued automatically for monitoring purposes). A fee of £20 is paid for the issue of such certificate.

b) apply for a social insurance number upon securing employment in Cyprus

c) apply for a residence permit in case one intends to stay longer than 3 months and take up employment in Cyprus. This application must be submitted before the expiration of this 3-month period to the Civil Registration and Migration Dept. through the local Immigration Branch of the Police (Please note that a fine is imposed in case of non-compliance).

In applying for a residence permit, the EU citizen must turn up personally at the Civil Registration and Migration Department (this service is for the time being, provided at the local Immigration Branch of the Police in all districts) and submit the following:

- A duly completed standard form (obtainable from Civil Registration and Migration Dept or from the local Immigration Branch of the Police).
- Valid Passport or ID Card
- Two photos
- Document of engagement of employment from the employer, stamped by the Labour Department (standardized form available from Civil Registration and Migration Dept or from the local Immigration Branch of the Police) to be completed and signed by the employer. For the time this form is not available so form No.M64 can be used.
- A fee of £5
(Note: if one is applying for dependants, one must present certified true copies of marriage certificates, birth certificates of children etc.).

It should be noted that the conclusion of formalities for acquiring a residence permit is not an obstacle to the immediate commencement of employment.

...ALSO THINKING OF MOVING TO CYPRUS

Postby Lambrinoula » Sun May 01, 2005 7:00 am

*************XRISTOS ANESTI & XRONIA POLLA SE OLOUS*******

Hi... I am new to this site and I am SO happy that I found it. I have a lot of questions and it sounds like there are a lot of people here that can help.

I am planning to get married in the near future to my Cypriot boyfriend. We are both currently in NYC and he came a few years ago to study. I am Greek-American and have lived here my whole life, spending the past 20 summers in Greece. I have always wanted to try living in Greece and have felt strongly about raising my family there and NOT in NYC. So--- now that we are getting serious, the subject has come up that he definitely wants to move back to Cyprus in a few years. I am willing to go with him and I am just trying to get as much info as possible so I can battle the negative reaction that I have gotten from friends and family so far. I KNOW it will be difficult but living in NYC is not a piece of cake either.

What can anyone tell me about the difficulties that I will be faced with???

P.S. I have a dual masters degree in Elementary Education and Special Education so I think finding a job wont be too hard.
