What now for Cyprus?

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

What now for Cyprus?

Postby eracles » Sat Apr 24, 2004 10:10 pm

BBC and Sky news are both reporting that the the Greek side will be cold shouldered in Europe. On Monday the EU will announce direct flights to Northern Cyprus and easing of sanctions.
Do you think there could be a second referenda? One expert said the chances of that are around 10%.
Some analysts have also said this is the worst day for Greek Cypriots since 1974 and that GC's have no idea how much of 'horrible, horribl, horrible' mistake they have just made.
Personally I don't see why the Greeks should be severely punished for 'obstructing' a solution when Turkey has done this for 30 years without repercussion but hell, what do I know!? The first time the Greek Cypriots say no the world wants to pounce on us!
What do you think will happen now then?

Papdopulos himself said today that he will work so TC will receive all the help they would receive if the Cyprus problem was solved and a united Cyprus was entering the EU but without direct or indirect recognition of the TRNC.

So I would say that TC would get a very good taste of what living in a free country within EU means. They will probably get 70-80% of the benefits they would get with a solution - but not recognition. After some time I hope they will realize that we do not want to gain anything against them, and they will be more compromising so we will find a solution that will be fair for the GC and will give to the TC the 100% of the benefits.

About EU announcing direct flights etc I wouldn't keep my breath. Monday is not far, we will see :)

Its kinda late now and I will go to sleep :P

If you truly want to start a discussion on a solution that will benefit all of us, then I will be glad to participate.
If you agree that the solution should create a federal, united, independent Cyprus then we agreed on more than half already

EU pledges aid for Turkish Cyprus

Talat: Seeking suspension of Greek Cypriot membership

The EU has pledged to release almost 260m euros (£170m) to Turkish Cypriots, following their approval of a UN plan to reunify the island.

The money is aimed at ending the economic isolation of Northern Cyprus after years of sanctions.

The UN plan was accepted by 65% of Turkish Cypriots, but Greek rejection means it cannot come into force.

Turkish Cypriot PM Mehmet Ali Talat has meanwhile formally asked the EU to freeze Greek Cypriot membership.

Any step from now on will only further divide the island. I don't know how or when we'll be so close to a solution again as we were last Saturday.
