Israel Rejected a UNILATERAL CEASE FIRE ::
As per the link provided by GR here is some interesting reading:
Paphitis ought to take note of the casualty figures given :

"""Gaza officials say the five days of airstrikes have killed 390, including 200 uniformed members of Hamas security forces, and have wounded about 1,600. The U.N. says at least 60 Palestinian civilians are among the dead.

While rejecting the truce, Israel said it would allow 2,000 tons of food and medical supplies to enter Gaza on Wednesday, in addition to 4,000 tons the military says have been allowed in since the offensive began. Several dozen chronically ill Gazans have also been authorized to enter Israel for treatment Wednesday, the military said.

MOST IMPORTANTLY :

Olmert told ministers Israel launched the operation to fundamentally change the situation in the south, and would not leave the job half done with a unilateral cease-fire.

U.N. humanitarian chief John Holmes said the death toll was estimated at 320-390 and the number of injured at 1,500-1,900. Between 20 percent and 25 percent of the dead are either women or children, said Karen Abu Zayd, U.N. Relief and Works Agency commissioner.

I really think you should just SHUT UP.

The death of civilians is a tragic and an unforgivable event .
Putting civilians into a situation where their lives are at risk is Hamas policy . Israel is targeting Hamas infrastructure not civilians .
Why should I shut up , is it because I expose your continued firm attachment to Al Qaeda and its terrorist activities ? Or is it perhaps that I challenge your comments showing readers that not all Cypriots are as naive and gullible as you are . I remember not long ago your inclusion of suicide bombers in "YOUR" options against the Turkish occupation army which included enlisting the help of mercenaries , Blackwater !!! You Plonker !!

Will the Gazans capitulate or continue to resist? I predict the latter.

The Israelis surely know how to 'sow', more 'terrorists'/freedom fighters/Mudjahids. They will never give up their fight to free their illegally occupied lands. Where talking fails, this will continue for a very long time.

Agreed. Another approach required.

The Palestinian people have systematically been displaced from their traditional lands and inheritance. The Gaza Strip, which has an area of 360sq kms, and is home to some 1.5 million displaced Palestinians. The population density is around 11,000 per sq km! At the same time, the Gazans are cut off from the rest of the world, unable to trade, and have been severely hampered from importing important supplies, including medicine. The GDP of the Gaza Strip is $600.00 per capita, which is ranked 167th in the world. It is literally one of the most impoverished areas of world.

The Israelis have taken away all their dignity, so no one should be surprised that the Gazans have become radicalised.

The below maps illustrate this systematic plunder of Palestinian land and inheritance over the last 6 decades.

The Sovereign Base Areas in Cyprus have an area of 250 sq kms, so imagine the squalor when you cram over 1 million people into such a small area.

For the last 5 days, we have witnessed Israeli aggression against a desperate and impoverished people. Women and children have been murdered in cold blood, and images such as these have been prolific on our television sets.

The casualty list is as follows:

1) over 416 civilians killed
2) some 2070 Gazans wounded, some critical

Women and children comprise 25% of those killed and 40% of those wounded.

So far, it has been confirmed that only 1 HAMAS militant has been killed.

Thank you Paphitis. If that doesnt illustrate why the Palestinians are so pissed off i dont know what will?! The diagram speaks for itself...disgraceful.

Also, thanks Talisker for that article. Suprising and refreshing to see that in a British newspaper.

Thanks for providing these maps Paphitis. They are a stark reminder of the extent of land theft from the Palestinians by the state of Israel.

Regarding violence between the two sides - the approximate relative rate of death is that for every Israeli dying a violent death during the two intifadas over the last 20 years, four Palestinians have died as a result of Israeli actions.

I agree that the Palestinian people deserve and must have their own independent and recognised nation , Hamas is however the stumbling block .
The Palestinian authority in West Bank have been ousted from Gaza by Hamas , and further more the Palestinian President Mr. Abbas has condemned Hamas and begged them , prior to the Israeli attacks, not to call an end to the ceasefire.
Hams is responsible for the current carnage , Israel will not remain dormant in the face of continued rocket attacks.
May I also suggest that you check your figures on casualties. From the total killed so far civilians amount to about 25% not as you state 100% .
Civilian Casualties are a disgrace to the human race and should never have been put into a situation where their lives are at risk. You seem to want to convey the message that Israel has embarked on the killing spree of civilians as a matter of course , the fact is it has not. It wants to force Hamas to abandon the daily rocket attacks , not an unreasonable wish . Hamas has stated that they will carry on until Israel is pushed into the sea !!
