Oracle - direct yes/no question for you - do you think the sentences handed down are fair with regards to the crimes the men were convicted of ?

My dear, I really cannot say because I have not heard all the evidence.

Have you?

No doubt the judge has to take into account all the circumstances. Conor seems pretty big and brusque and maybe there was more evidence to show he went looking for trouble than we have been told by Conor, here on this forum.

I abhor physical violence, but I can see how men can be driven to it. A momentary mistake (especially if provoked) should be offered some leniency. It's not like Conor is some meek, gentle, quiet old lady whose only 5ft tall :D

Of course, it is rarely black n white what happens, and interpretation by all parties involved makes for grey areas. I guess the only fact to date is that the 3 developers were convicted of ABH.

Would it be common place, in Cyprus, for the reasoning behind a sentence to be published ? Not in this case but generally.

BD, people have got off in the UK for alot worst offences. paedophiles, rapists and murderers.

As for ABH, he got what the judge was allowed to give them. Like was said first offences etc etc. Courts can go eitherway, there is never any telling and the result is not always what one expects. Conors success (if could be called that), is that they have now got criminal records and this will prevent them from doing many things and may cause them other hardships, not to mention the bad publicity they suffered. So, in effect Conor has won, he may not have got them put away, but he has caused them much aggro elsewhere. I am not sure which is worse.

To quote an old adage :- "If you look for trouble you will find plenty of it"

I didn't bring the UK up, it is not relevant, this is Cyprus [/shrug]

Like i asked previously, is it common for there to be a reasoning behind a sentence 'i give him xyz because abc and 123' ?

I would hope it is seen as another clear sign of justice in Cyprus, not specifically a success for Conor.

That distinction is rather pertinent since (as GR! pointed out) Conor decided to politicise procedures by blaming/shaming the whole of Cyprus. It would stand, then, that Conor was comparing Cyprus to some yardstick with which he is more familiar. Hence, UK.

I would, still, like to know why his local MP didn't appear to support Conor ...

As a slight aside, something which popped into my head whilst I was mixing some concrete, er, porridge, earlier.

In the UK, Leasehold properties are very common. Effectively you "own" a flat or house, might have a mortgage on it, and pay a small rent or lease to the Freehold owner. The Freehold owner is obviously free to remortgage the property or sell the Freehold on to a third party.

Isn't this basically what the moaning Brits are doing with living/holidaying in a property which they assume is "Freehold", but in actual fact is "Leasehold" (by a different name?) from the Developers which still own the land?

Just interested ...
