To be serious, it's a common issue amongst exiles. They lose their identity living abroad and then think that other people who have a strong identity and culture must be deceived. When you have no identity you start to believe that all identifications are arbitrary and "false". It's often those with the weakest sense of who they are, that are most prone to think that others have a "false" identity. They are projecting their own weaknesses and self-doubt upon others. Casting doubt on the identity of others gives them a false sense of superiority. But they are in effect attempting to conceal their own inadequacies and uncertainties having lost their own way.

How can we help them?

What they are missing is a sense of pride and self-worth. They need to re-discover their roots and heritage. It's very strange. Some Greek exile communities are very patriotic. The Greek Americans have a strong identification with Greece and Cyprus and do a lot of lobbying on our behalf. I don't know what happened to the Charlies and their Aussie equivalents. Maybe because Britain and Australia are weak pissy cultures these days with no real identity.

Actually let me tell you a bit about the patriotism of greeks and cypriots in Australia.

The so called leaders couldn't give a stuff about Greece or cyprus but get themselves on committees for the thrill of obtaining a bit of power and influence and to stoke their pathetic egos.

There are many good Greeks and Cypriots here, but all of them get shafted and end up not wanting anything to do with either. The young stay away because I am told that our so called "leaders" are corrupted and unethical individuals which use both Greece and Cyprus as a political football for their own gain.

I have also been told by certain people that they are nothing but traitors to our cause. No one supports them, and their associations are being snuffed out. That is the situation here in Australia and it is the same in the US as well.

No one goes to them. in Melbourne there are a million Greeks and Cypriots and you will be lucky to get 100 of them attend the same gathering.

The Greek Community is really sick and I remember my old man telling me to stay away from those arseholes. They will backstab you because that is what they do. And he is right!

he told me to never send my kids to any Private Greek Schools, don't get involved in any Churches or Church groups, don't enrol them in any Greek Sporting clubs or associations. I hear that many parents are saying the same thing!

I don't know what went wrong with you lot down under. The Greek Americans are very different though. They are successful, wealthy and extremely supportive and patriotic. They also do a lot of work on behalf of Cyprus and the families of the missing. I speak from personal experience and can honestly say they are not in it for themselves but do a lot of work behind the scenes that all Cypriots should be grateful for.

Cypriot Australians are also successful, wealthy (there is no shortage of money let me tell you), supportive and patriotic.

The problem is, all the good ones are persecuted and only the rif raf remain, with their false agendas. I have been to new York and know many. In fact I have family in Astoria and Manhattan, and they tell me a similar story. That is what I am telling you.

Unfortunately, you will not find ANY patriotism from the sources you should expect it from, but when you venture to those not on the radar you will find many patriots, unfortunately these true patriots are not allowed to get involved in anything and they won't for the sake of their sanity and their families.

boomers knows what I am talking about!

the Cypriot community in Australia is dieing a slow agonising death. once the first and second generations die out, there will no longer be any Cypriots left. No one cares about the youth or will listen to them so they are not interested. :(

you are wasting your breath paphitis, these people only pay lip service with knee pads...they do not seek justice...always blame others, but fail to see that the others double crossed them because they have become greased and turkeys...they are unwilling to even seek the truth...

They're used to messing with sheep too much and they have adopted their habits. Their shepherd called them in for help to do business deals with Turkey.

Turkey doesn't need anymore "business deals" from us. They got you remember, serving their agenda and cementing the partition. When you rock up I can see Erdogan and Eroglu rubbing their hands with glee and drinking to your health!

That's right! You are NOT Cypriot!

These are the Cypriots and play attention when Mihalis becomes agitated and angry even when he is called a "Greek Cypriot".
