Yes I did say 50 million. More accurate to say there were 50 million visitors or arrivals through Dubai International which is the worlds busiest airport. There are 97.3 million anticipated visitors through Dubai in 2018 and 103.5 million in 2020.

There were 20 million tourists.

RH prev. comment - I have never been to the UAE but ALL these ME countries have these labour camps. I have worked in four ME counties and I know because I have seen them.

Well I have been to UAE and there are no labour camps. There are places of cheap accommodation yes. Sometimes certain business may place their workers there, but usually most workers rent there because its cheap and they are there to earn the money to send back home, which is the usual case for the itinerant Indian and Bangladeshi workers. These workers are usually blue collar and work in tourism, taxi, truck drivers, cleaners etc.

They are not employed by a major employer but by individuals. They usually live in cheap apartments ..... often owned by their employer in areas where ONLY the lowest of the low would contemplate living.

A lot are self employed and rent there. Taxi Drivers for instance.

But I wouldn't call them the lowest of low. But it this way, the lowest of the low in Dubai is actually the equivalent of the highest of the high in Limassol and Nicosia. Dubai is a lot more prettier than Limassol and a lot more affluent. Probably the most affluent society on the planet.

There are Cypriots who work in the Oil and Gas industry earning a fair bit of money who rent in these areas because the rent is cheap. They just want to save as much as they can or send as much as they can to Cyprus. Most Westerners however are either provided for by their company or are paid an allowance and rent down town.

There are no compounds in UAE.

Cost is a factor, so they give them what they can get away with ..... and that is virtually anything.

If you want better you pay for it. Example - A Cypriot friend’s son lives in Dubai, works as an actuary for an Intl. Bank and he pays over $3000 a month + services for a single bed studio flat in a reasonable area. Even on his very respectable salary and expenses, he cannot find anything bigger that he could afford and a villa is right out of the question.

Well he is being ripped off. $3000 per month in Dubai is laughable. Multiply that by 10 more like it. Actuaries are paid a lot more than that in Western Countries. In Australia for instance, they are paid about $10000 AUD per month plus bonuses. I do not expect UAE banks to pay less than that.

You should tell your friends Son to get a better job. THAT IS NOT A RESPECTABLE SALARY IN UAE. Taxi Drivers earn that.

And yes, if you want to live in the centre of Dubai, you will have to pay fairly high rents.

There are no state labour camps etc etc. Anyone is free to rent in the same apartment blocks and there are many westerners which do as well.

Who said anything about ‘State’ ? Westerners unless they are maybe from the former Soviet block ( or Australians ), do not live in the same accommodation as Bangladeshi/Indian/Philipino migrant workers.

Most Australians are classified as professionals and are either provided their accommodation or they rent and are paid a rental allowance. these are professionally qualified people. Usually, Oil and Gas.

The Indian and Bangladeshi workers are usually alone and have left their families back home and are employed in low income Blue Collar jobs and earn a lot less. They got no choice but to rent as cheap as they can and save to send as much as they can back home to their family. They are not slaves and their accomodation is fairly descent and even better than some accomodation in Sydney, Hong Kong or Los Angeles even.

It does not really bother me that much but his stupidity and his way of presenting his views is irritating.

So he has once again made sweeping statements about the high esteem so many members hold for him and how poorly they think of me to the extent they have to PM Paphitis to let him know. ..... I thought I would attempt to see just how many really do back his extremist views, because extremist is what they are, and to be able to do so off the public part of the Forum!

My view is that we all have our own opinions and are free to disagree ..... but reasonably politely. It also helps to back your views and opinions with links to some source. Paphitis seems to lack the intelligence to do either and just makes wild statements. (Actually his presentation reminds me of the female North Korean news announcer that conveys the news on NK's latest achievements)

Now I will wait to see if a) Paphitis is telling the truth or b) he is just bragging ..... again! I don't like public polls. So now I will just watch for PM notifications .........

...i read this thread for them, the links; and after so many years, actually, from the start, as a thread it now carries quite a weight to those seeking their own answers on the topic, because of them (the links), even in the years to come.

What is Paphitis, is hard to get through frankly. What is Robin Hood to be fair is as complex. I am told by GR my work is a nightmare to him, so little of it he understands. What Milti says, though, is quite correct, in the end the time we take on such subjects demonstrates we care (or not), for Cyprus.

Enjoy "us", be happy who you are, we are Cyprus on this Forum with such a crowd, what with the "Turks", the "Greeks", those with views extreme. As a Cypriot though i feel a little crowded out sometimes, what i know as a Cypriot, so many words to read said in an anger that's personal; that is the Problem, isn't it?

I never said that at all idiot. I am well aware Aleppo is not in our hands and it wasn't before either. We were just upset at all the War Crimes.

What is in our hands is Northern Syria or about 30% of Syria itself. Assad might as well forget about these parts. These parts belong to the Kurds.
