Maximus. turkey then known as the ottomans invaded cyprus in 1570 from the venetians so get your terminology correct. Correct me if I am wrong but if you walk around larnaca you will still see names of streets that the ottomans had changed to for example Mustafa pasha street. 1974 is only referred to as a invasion by GC s. All other country's refer to it for what it is which is intervention. I don't care much for what you think or what you believe. All I know is that TC s will be safe under the protection of turkey and what led to 1974 will never happen again.

Utter rubbish! In future don't be tempted to post your personal opinion about things that can be easily verified with facts.

Just to put the military events in Ukraine with the Russians aside for a minute as to what the final outcome is going to be and who is right and who is wrong, the fact that Ukraine is a major transit for the Russian Gas to reach the EU, the Cyprus and Israel Gas will become ever more important to the EU to access, therefore, I can see greater importance and urgency being placed by the major players to get the Cyprus problem sorted out as soon as possible to get the Gas supply to the EU as soon as possible. I would say the event in Ukraine now has strengthened the RoC's hand to get the kind of Federation they want for Cyprus in order for them to get the Gas to the EU as soon as possible.

Another Ottoman-induced wrong that has to be righted.

Crimea, in particular, was appended to Ukraine at a later stage and has never had any sort of ethnic or historical ties with Ukraine. Crimea is also of great strategic importance to Russia, which has important bases there. I would say that a territory for recognition deal is called for between Russia and Ukraine, in which Crimea and possibly other ethnically Russian parts of the former republic are ceded to Russia and in return for which Russia respects the right of the rest of Ukraine to move out of its orbit. This has to be the common sense approach.

I fully agree with that Tim. What a sensible level headed approach ............ this will have to be the basis for a resolution anyway because the US would have to enter the Black Sea to launch their cruise missile 'solution' as they were prepared to in Syria. The US/UK are in no position to start wagging their fingers at Russia, when you consider their histories of invasion and regime change to protect their 'National (mainly commercial?) interests'. At least the Russians haven't softened them up first with a bombing campaign.

As a Brit living in Cyprus, if the same situation arose here I would be very appreciative if the UK put troops on the ground to protect not only their bases but us ethnic Brits as well and prevent a descent into violence.

This is back to front. The situation did arise in Cyprus but conflict was purposefully created to plunge the island in to violence so the US/UK can take advantage. Cypriots don't appreciate it.

Do you support the rights of Cypriots to self determination, democracy and freedom etc?

British foreign policy did not and does not and brought about the bases and the Turkish invasion and occupation. Cypriots don't appreciate it.

Would you prefer Russia invade and occupy Anatolia next and to send a few missiles towards the bases to soften us Brits up?

They invaded again in 1974. You will also see the destruction of cultural heritage, the Anatolian settlers and the names of streets in the north that the occupying Turks have changed.

The left side of your brain is in direct conflict and contradiction with your right buttock.

What a load of cobbler’s! According to history, the GC’s attempted a coup with the help of the Greek Junta. The Turks intervened as a guarantee power to protect the TC minority and they never left. Nobody engineered the event other than the GC’s themselves in support of Enosis or union with Greece. GC’s don’t like it because the plan misfired and they lost out.
Do you support the rights of Cypriots to self determination, democracy and freedom etc.?

I assume you mean a united Cyprus as opposed to two autonomous entities on the same island? Yes, but I am not holding my breath! The GC’s seem to want three things:

a) Turkish troops out.
b) Settlers out!
c) All their lost property back! (or compensation at current market value?)

They simply will not get what they want but do not appear to accept a compromise.

British foreign policy did not and does not (I think something is missing here?) and brought about the bases and the Turkish invasion and occupation. Cypriots don't appreciate it.

More cobblers! As a nation Cypriots fought valiantly against a Colonial power, they won and got their independence. From that point on it was the Cypriots that screwed it all up, so stop continually blaming everybody else for problems of your own creation!

The British SBA’s were agreed with the then Cypriot Administration as part of the independence deal, whether they should have paid some rent to the Cyprus Government seems a debatable point but, they did not get them through military conquest, nor the Island of Cyprus either come to that.

Would you prefer Russia invade and occupy Anatolia next and to send a few missiles towards the bases to soften us Brits up?

Why on earth would British bases be attacked if the Russians took Anatolia?

According to History Robbin, Cypriots wanted Enosis - but this was denied by yours truly in cahoots with the US and Turkey in the 50's.

You call the agreements of 1960 independence? Your a joker.

You think that the results of the illegal invasion shouldn't be reversed? Your a joker.

You think Britain is actually a guarantor of the sovereign integrity and independence of Cyprus? what a joker.

You think Britain did not get those bases in Cyprus through blackmail, subterfuge and military conquest? your a joker.

Not a joker ..... just being realistic. Anyway, this tread is about Ukraine which like just Cyprus in 1974, I doubt the Americans even knew where it was until a few days ago and again, like Cyprus, the world will move on in a very short time and all this will be history and forgotten, except by Ukrainians........... whatever the result.
