'The Pain Will Never Go Away': Searching for the Disappeared People of Cyprus
https://news.vice.com/article/the-pain- ... -of-cyprus

...Kyriakos Constanti Hadjisoteri, was a Cypriot, not a "Greek". He stayed like many others (who stayed and disappeared as well) in the village believing in the Universal Principals on which a country like Cyprus, or Turkey, for that matter, is based upon and dedicated to defend. Men like him are my heroes, like those before him in '63, called "Turks", they were robbed of their identity, and their lives.

...a review of the stark results this year,

The exhumations and identifications of remains, belonging to missing persons, recorded until September an extremely low number, Presidential Commissioner Photis Photiou has said.

Photiou addressed the General Assembly of the Hellenic Committee of Parents and Relatives of Missing Persons in Athens and his address was delivered by the Head of the Committee Maria Kalbourtzi.

Speaking about annual results, Photiou said the remains of only seven people were identified until September and that only one is a Greek Cypriot.

The rest are Turkish Cypriots, he said, adding that the results of exhumations in the occupied areas area is also very poor.

He pointed out that Turkey must at last cooperate for the recovery, identification and return to their families, of the remains of all of the missing persons on the island.

Photiou added that Turkey bears huge responsibility to this end.

The Commissioner added that according to figures by the Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP) there are 1,510 cases of Greek Cypriots and Greek missing persons in the files and so far only 701 remains have been identified and given to the families for a proper burial.

He added that in most cases the families are given only small parts of bones of their beloved persons.

He pointed out that Cyprus’ Government spares no efforts in the issue of missing persons and has warned about the consequences of its closure, as Turkey wishes.

Photiou pointed out that Turkey’s responsibilities have been pointed out by many international bodies, such as the UN, the Council of Europe, the European Parliament and the European Court of Human Rights.

...what these families of the missing and the murdered want more than anything, is to be respected, that their loved ones lost to them are recognised for who they are and were, Cypriots; all the same, who died at the hands of "Greeks" and "Turks", also no different, and the same.

How can we commemorate them, these fallen heroes worthy of this consideration without even one Memorial to them? This too, is a good question these families ask.

...silenced, Cypriots silent i say no more. If we dared to look at ourselves as these families do, that fear, of who we are will fade away, knowing at least, we are not "Greeks" or "Turks", being Greeks and Turks, being Cypriots, such dogma is anathema to us.

...while i do not trust the motives of this paper or the "Turkish" government in control of Turkey at the moment; such is the propaganda which makes these victims, "martyrs".

For the record, against their senseless killing,

CMP exhumed additional human remains at excavation site in Bellapais in April
CNA - CYPRUS/Nicosia 29/04/2021 18:51
The Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP) has continued its activities during the month of April in an effort to locate, exhume and identify more missing persons.

Ιn a press release circulated on Thursday, CMP says that it exhumed additional human remains at an excavation site in Bellapais, adding that this exhumation "increases the estimated number of persons recovered at this location to three and the total number of persons exhumed in 2021 across the island to six".

According to the CMP, excavations continue throughout Cyprus at seven sites and since January 2021, it has identified 12 missing persons despite losing 41 working days due to Covid-19 related movement restrictions in January and February.

...the numbers seem to count; less and less are being found although there are still so many lost, still missing.

I recall the Turkish Army, who to this day remains most unhelpful without the full disclosure that they have promised over years.

There is one site East of Girne in an Army camp which is said to contain 1000 people's remains but as yet there is no permission to go in and dig.

Truth for victims paramount. A mechanism for truth-telling is needed.

https://news.un.org/en/story/2022/04/1116082

The Working Group emphasised that “it is essential to depoliticise the issue of missing persons in Cyprus and genuinely treat it as a human rights and humanitarian issue”.

They added that more effective results can only be achieved through “an unconditional commitment among all concerned stakeholders to fully cooperate towards its solution and to give the rights of victims and their relatives top priority. Time is running out.”

Underlining the need to leave mistrust and resentment behind, to “finally put an end to the anguish and pain of all families”, the panel said that bicommunal initiatives aimed at reconciliation and social cohesion, need to be given full and unconditional support.
