Patriki village, occupied Famagusta, Cyprus.
George Michael - real name 'Georgios Kyriacos Panagiotiou' 's ancestral village.

The usual suspects do not appear to have jumped up to have a go at you pointing out some of George Michael's Cypriot antecedants,on the grounds of his sexuality, as they did for David Bowie.

Sorry, but I like George Michael because he is responsible for pushing some pretty heavy duty boundaries and is helping Cypriots grow.

I like it when boundaries are pushed. Cypriots (older generations) are still quite homophobic and sexist too.

Plus, young Cypriots are a very progressive and laid back bunch. They are the new bastions, and it is good to see all the old fogies and old farts on this forum squirm!

George Michael was an Ambassador to Cyprus and we should all be proud of his accomplishments in music. He was a very big star there is no doubt about it.

Homophobic and sexist?. This is 2017, and we are in Cyprus, not in Saudi Arabia. Women and men have the same rights from 1960.

Beg to differ about George Michael being an ambassador for Cyprus, since I suspect few of his many fans outside the Cypriot community or in Cyprus knew, let alone cared about him being Cypriot. He never sought to hide but he never seemed to play on it either, and I cannot trace he ever publically did anything to promote Cyprus.

That does not take away from his private Generosity to the UK Thalasamia institute, which helped many of Cypriot origins with that terrible condition live longer and more fulfilling lives, and many other private Charitable gestures. Nor does it mean we should not be proud of his musical acheivements, which Cypriots can be proud of, as well as for any world wide impact he may have had on LGBT issues, following his public "comming out" after his US arrest. Judging however by comments here, and those of sone the men in the funny hats and long black dresses, his impact on LGBT issues in Cyprus is not so great. More the pity. Yes attitudes are changing but they have a long way to go.

We drove through Patriki a few years ago on the way to Komi Kebir (my father's village). As I recall it was never much of a village before 1974, scruffy and run down but as we saw 5 years ago it it's a complete shit hole populated by settlers from Turkey. Komi Kebir wasn't much better, run down with many dilapidated older houses and only a few new ones - and a smashed up graveyard where my grandparents are buried.
