China’s retaliation to US tariffs

Postby Get Real! » Tue Apr 03, 2018 4:40 pm

Paphitis says...

I was so hoping the USA would introduce tarrifs. trump is a man of his word.

This free trade business is a total disaster when Chinese workers are paid $20 dollars a month.

Londonrake says...

A quick inventory of electrical stuff around my house shows about 80% made in China. They've undercut almost everyone and dumped vast amounts of goods, as their trade surplus grows ever larger.

As an example of the situation. American cars in China can cost double their price in the US, due to import taxes, so only 5% of vehicles there are foreign. In the US, where taxes are much lower, it's 25% imported cars.

Isn't this one of the things Trump campaigned on?

You’re only seeing the end products such as cars, kettles, and toasters but trade starts at the raw material level where predominantly steel is involved and I think you’ll find that’s where China is quite lenient.

I did add (too late! ) that 25% of cars in the US amounts to an awful lot of wheels. As you will know, if you've tried driving around the likes of LA in the evening.

"China’s subsidization and continued overcapacity is the root cause of the steel crises. Instead of targeting fairly traded U.S. exports, China needs to stop its unfair trading practices which are harming U.S national security and distorting global markets," Walters said in an emailed statement.

China preparing list of retaliatory tariffs on U.S. imports
China will soon announce a list of retaliatory tariffs on United States exports to China to counter an expected announcement from the United States of proposed new tariffs on Chinese imports, the Global Times said Wednesday.

This is an interesting subject and from what I've read so far has a capacity to lead to serious confrontation. Far more so than the likes of NK.

Unfortunately, I have got to bail out for the rest of the evening.

I hope you recover soon GR. The extent of your illness is evident in your uncharacteristic "niceness". Frankly, it's a worry.

It's got nothing to do with a tit for tat, and the US tariffs are not leveled at China in a vindictive or underhanded manner.

Trump campaigned on this policy and was elected. The reason for the tariffs are to address a cost issue which does not favour American manufacturing. By introducing tariffs, it allows American manufacturers a better opportunity to remain competitive and that would support American manufacturing and jobs.

China can do what it likes. It's not a political issue.

That's odd. I just had a look and the Dow's up 400 on the day. :? The Hang Seng looks like it's caught your malady though.

Yep, it's currently up 400 points It's rather odd because there was only a 459 point fall yesterday but never a 600 point drop. just goes to show how reliable zerohedge is.
