It must have been a hell of a bang ..... as we both heard it and felt it and we are 200km from the city. We sit fairly high above sea level with nothing but sea between us and Beirut!

It was so strange that we went out side to see what it was and could see nothing. Looked around then went back inside and about 10 mins later it was all over the news. Surely an explosion that big will have killed a lot of people?

Now we wait to find out what it was caused by. The social media type videos on Sputnic show the fire as fairly big with a lot of smoke then ........ WHAM, a truly massive explosion and a white mushroom cloud that appeared to be a massive shock wave.

Did anybody else feel/hear it?

yeah I did. well I heard a noise, kind of sounded like a low frequency boom , like a something large and flat had fallen over and I thought I felt a slight vibration. Deep not massively loud bassy 'thwoouoop' and tiny bit of vibration.

Videos taken from inland of the fire show flashes which could have been fireworks just before the explosion proper. Reports now on the local news channels says a statement by an 'official' has said it was high explosives that ignited. A bit like the Mari explosion ..... nothing to be concerned about! That was until it went BANG!

Indeed. A government official is quoted as saying that a fire started in the port ignited a store of explosive material “confiscated by the Lebanese government years ago”. Including a large amount of sodium nitrate.

Now, doesn’t that have a familiar ring about it?

In hindsight, the storing of such at a somewhat remote naval base appear to much smarter than within a capital...

I've watched the footage on Lebanese TV. The destruction is extreme. Lebanon is in no way capable of dealing with this now, on top of everything else

I’m amazed you all heard it from over 200 kms away.

When you guys heard it, they explosion would have already happened 9 minutes prior.

Wasn’t it already in the news before you heard it?
