Trump lawyers face penalties for ‘stunning’ bid to overturn election, judge says

Nine pro-Trump lawyers who participated in a Michigan lawsuit to overturn the 2020 election results will face financial penalties and could even be disbarred, a federal judge has ruled.

“This lawsuit represents a historic and profound abuse of the judicial process,” US District Judge Linda Parker wrote in a blistering opinion on Wednesday. “It is one thing to take on the charge of vindicating rights associated with an allegedly fraudulent election. It is another to take on the charge of deceiving a federal court and the American people into believing that rights were infringed, without regard to whether any laws or rights were in fact violated. This is what happened here.”

Former Attorney General William Barr warned former President Donald Trump he would lose the 2020 election months before the contest because suburban voters viewed him as a "f***ing a**hole," a forthcoming book claims.

Barr told Trump in April 2020 that while his base "cares about seeing [former FBI Director James Comey] and the rest of those guys held accountable," suburban voters "don't care about your f***ing grievances."

"In my opinion, this is not a base election," Barr told Trump, according to what Washington Post journalists Bob Woodward and Robert Costa wrote in Peril. "Your base is critical, and you'll get it out. And there are a lot of people out there, independents and Republicans in the suburbs of the critical states, that think you're an a**hole. They think you act like an a**hole, and you got to, you got to start taking that into account."

Thank you to the judge sharing their opinion but they should also know, if they are a judge, that the law doesn’t work that way.

In a democracy like the US, the political parties have a right to challenge the election result to force a recount. It has happened in every US election, and judicial oversight does ensure the integrity of the entire democratic process.

The lawyers have every right to challenge and represent the claimant even if it is bogus. You are not allowed to penalise the claimant or their legal attorneys.

Then it is incumbent on the judicial system to make a judgement based on the evidence presented. If the claimant is wrong, no doubt they will lose. But that is where it ends. Threatening the claimant ir their lawyers is not something that anyone should condone.

Clearly another Trump Derangement Syndrome. This judge is lucky to survive the Trump purge when he was in office. Maybe a chip on the shoulder one would suspect as they are probably a Democrat appointed judge. Fact is though, the GOP has the numbers in the federal courts. So good luck.

This is another straw man and it will hurt the Democrats. The legislative elections are drawing bear and if the GOP is looking at a landslide win here. That’s step one for Trump 2.0

Former President Donald Trump could be blocked from running again, a former White House ethics boss has said.

Richard Painter, who served as the chief White House ethics lawyer under President George W Bush from 2005 to 2007, told CNN on Wednesday that the 14th amendment to the US Constitution bars anyone who has supported an insurrection from holding public office.

Mr Painter, who became a Democrat in 2018 to run for Senate after being a Republican for “30 years”, said Mr Trump’s actions in connection to the Capitol riot on 6 January should bar him from running again.

On 6 January, a pro-Trump mob laid siege to the Capitol in an attempt to stop the congressional certification of President Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory after being fed lies by Mr Trump, who falsely claimed that the election had been rigged.

“I will note I was a Republican for 30 years, and one of the most important accomplishments of the Republican Party was the 14th Amendment of the United States Constitution,” Mr Painter told CNN. “Section 3 of the 14th Amendment disqualifies from public office anyone who has supported an insurrection, such as what happened during January 6th at the Capitol.”
