The Trump administration has officially sanctioned the burning of nearly 500 tonnes of untouched emergency food, following the closure of the USAID programme.

Valued at a staggering £597,472,000 (USD$800,000,000), this amount of food could have fed approximately 1.5 million children for a week. The Atlantic reports that it will cost an additional £97,000 (USD$130,000) to burn the food, which is nearing its expiry date after the agency was disbanded and thus unable to distribute the provisions, originally intended for underprivileged children in parts of Africa and the Middle East.

Even more food may soon go off and have to be thrown away as hundreds of thousands of "boxes of emergency food pastes, also already purchased, are currently collecting dust in American warehouses," the publication reports.
