It could be that I was raised in the British school system in London or that I took the Werner Erhard‘s Est seminar Training (Erhard Seminar Training..EST) in the early 80‘s in San Francisco.

More so than Europeans and Australians are. Much easier to approach, talk too, as they are the least arrogant as well,

I can always count on you getting it completely wrong, Paphitis... :)

An example. You know how many First Officers get bullied by Captains on the Flight Deck over really stupid and unreasonable things.

We had 3 reports at work in our company alone. All from the same culprits. To the point where we had one FO trainee threaten to walk off the flight deck in Sydney. Was convinced otherwise.

These FO were assigned to me and another guy. I didn’t see anything too wrong with them. They just needed training. They were exactly at the place you could reasonably expect them to be for their experience.

One, had a training file that read a bit like a horror story. Scan issues. Labelled as dangerous. He was in an awful predicament but I got them through and they passed their check rides.

Then, they tried to say my training delivery wasn’t as strict as it should be. Well they only just managed to pass through me and a checker that flew Canberra Bombers. The bullies tried to undermine me and the Checker. Too unprofessional they said. How can this guy pass. He passed alright and he passed well and I like it a lot when I see people succeed. No greater reward.

We have Captains that like to run things like benevolent dictators. That in my opinion and also the professional consensus is unsafe in itself. It isn’t high standards. It’s low standards. It’s bad because the FO is in fear and can’t function properly. An FO is always an asset in a 2 crew environment. They always manage to sometimes save the Captains butt too when you treat them as an asset and more of an equal.

Americans are very big on this. Better than Australians.

They had their issues some decades ago but today they are setting the bench marks.

This is the problem with the Brits. They think they are better than the rest. Especially if you put class into the equation. Oh I went to this school so I’m better than that kid who went to that other school.

The opposite could be true. But this is the general outlook of the Brits, Europeans and to some extent Aussies.

However, the best leaders are the leaders who don’t give orders or instructions they themselves are not prepared to do.

Such as let’s say an Oxford Educated Officer who would order thousands of cannon fodder to certain death. They don’t matter because they were not Oxford educated or from this or that family,

How do you think this will go down with the average American? It won’t go down well at all.

And in Australia we have certain elements of this British thinking among our Anglos. It’s thankfully dying off. We are going more the American way. In other words, we are becoming:

EGALITARIANS!

You know, the stuff America was founded upon?

How many times do you hear the Oxford Scholars say they are better? All the time? British Education - it’s better isn’t it?

What’s so good about it when it divides people? Do we really need to think we are better than the other person because we went to this school or that school? In other words maintain the old boys club school ties. People get jobs because of it and often it’s not merit based.

So who is better? The British way or the American way?

If you ask me, the Americans are miles in front.

I never went to any elite schools in the UK. The schools I did go to however were very disciplined. I went to a 1,600 all boys school wearing uniforms and sang morning hymns every day.

Actually, in the US, the more elite college one goes to, the more bragging they do, just like in the UK, only US has more elite colleges than the UK. However, many do well also getting their degrees at the local community colleges.

Me neither. I went to good Catholic Schools. Children are doing better than I did but you see this attitude there. That this school is the best, hence the graduates from it will also be the best people and best educated. Not always true. But it definitely is a tie school like the ones you find in the UK. Because there is power and influence from these families is why. It also means that the children could be the worst of all. Worse than public educated children because they are spoilt and won’t struggle.

Yes I’m not denying these schools don’t exist in America. They even have institutions like Princeton, Harvard, Columbia and many more that are right up there.

Just look at the general American attitude is what I am saying. Far more egalitarian right? A bit fairer in that they are more prepared to give you a go. Less workplace bullying right? I really like that about their thinking.

There will always be favouritism in every country. But the English and Europeans take the cake.
