Regardless of opinions on the damage done, it’s effect and duration, this event’s more.

The bridge is symbolic, as well as functional. Putin’s personal prestige is inexorably linked to its creation and existence. One of Medvedev’s (various) nuclear threats in the past has been that an attack on it would provoke a “Judgement Day” response.

It’s perhaps analogous to part of the Kremlin being demolished. Things would keep running and the damage be rapidly repaired, but that isn’t really the point. Is it?
