There's a tremendous wastage of ammunition by the Russians.And I noticed this at a huge number of videos. I mean look at the fields around, they must have thrown 1000+ shells in the area aiming at enemy troops inside open top trenches!!

Simply because nobody told them (?) to unscrew the default contact fuze from the shell and replace it with a proximity fuze. Shells with contact fuse won't harm anyone in the trench even if the shell explodes as close as 1m to the side of the trench.
However if the shell uses a proximity fuse it can be set to detonate 20-60m above the ground and kill everyone in the trench either with it's blast wave or it's shell fragments. It doesn't even need to detonate exactly above the trench, 20-30m offset will still do the job just fine.

The important thing imo is their age. These are between 30 to 60 years old. People who probably never fired a gun in their lives. That's what's left in Ukraine...
I also noticed many of the newly captured POWs are middle age people.
