National Pride

Postby twinkle » Fri Feb 10, 2006 10:20 am

Last one I promise.....

Why are Cypriots not proud to be Cypriots? They would rather (it seems) be associated closer to Greece and wave a Greek flag that a Cypriot flag. If there was a football match between Greece and Cyprus, who would the Cypriots support? Also, why, when Greece won the EUrovision, did I hear Cypriots saying, "we won"? You didn't .Greece won and Cyprus came about 18th

I've had this conversation with many people. I class myself as a English/Cypriot not a English/ Greek Cypriot. If Scotland or Wales were playing football with another team I would support anyone, not Scotland or Wales because they are part of the UK.

When there are national holidays and celebrations the Greek flags are flying in full force. Yet Cypriots refer to Greeks as Kalamaras all too quickly!

Cypriots should be more proud and push their national pride. By refering to yourselves as GC or TC there will ALWAYS be a division.

Your Cypriots...be proud of that!

another thing regarding eurovision, why does anna vissi want to participate for greece?
is she not proud to be a cypriot?
do the cypriots not want to be cypriots?
cypriots make have greek heritage running in their blood, but they have to realise where to draw a line.
as twinkle says, cypriots have to put cyprus first, and identify themselves as cypriots and not greek cypriots or turkish cypriots...

I agree entirely.

Well done Twinkle... little star!

Denktash claimed that the only true Cypriot is the donkey. But better a proud donkey than an ass trying to be a stallion.

Twinkle and dsm,
your posts are music to my ear.Keep it up.
I was sad when I saw all those Greek flags when Bagdatis played in the Australian open. And i won't mention those ugly posters which declared that evertyhing was Greek and A Good Turk was a Dead Turk.
As a Cypiotturk I was praying for Marcos to stand up and say "hey,i am a Cypriot, where are the Cyprus flags???" I know I was expecting too much from the kid who was so overwhelmed to be in the final that he probably forgot his name! :D Notice how i said i was a Cypriotturk. This has nothing to do with the grammar or the noun or the adjective shit.I put Cypriot first in capitals and add onto it a small case turk. This reflect the reality of Cyprus now (people want to know which side you come from),and my hope for the future. When i can drop the "turk" bit and say proudly i am a Cypriot. Not because I am ashamed of my ethnicity( as some would no doubt suggest) but because I am being true to myself and my homeland and my nation.Cypriots are one nation divided by language and religion, both manmade artificial barriers.
I will always be of Turkish ethnic origin,as i will always be 6 feet tall with hazel eyes with olive skin. What is the big deal???

r Twinkle, I find your ideas rather muddled. A man or women from Crete or Samos, or the Isle of Wight for that matter would think of themselves as coming from those islands but would think of themselves as Greek or English. Greeks and Turks happening to live on the same island do not make one ethnic group. It is obvious apart from the odd taste in food we have very little in common with Turks. We are spawned (for a better word) from a Christian Europe culture and they from an Islamic Asian one. It is seems to be fashionable modern trend for inclusively. This as history has shown has always been skin deep. That is why when the Greek national anthem is played we sing it at the top of our voices of when Greece won the European cup Greeks Cypriot flooded the streets of North London. We are who we are , it is in our genetic make up.

But Cyprus is an indepedent country with its own government. There is no independent government on the Isle of Wight or Crete. There are no separate passports. Cypriots have a Cypriot passport not a GC passport.

Also, the fact that GC's in London are so fanatical to be GC is because there is no sense of National Pride (Cypriot) national pride here in Cyprus. People need to belong to something/somewhere and as there is more (it seems) to be proud of as a Greek, they would rather be seen as GC than just Cypriot.

No Michael:
We are who we are , it is in our genetic make up.

It is not in our genetic makeup. It is in our heads brainwashed by zealous nationalism. Language and religion alone do not make a nation.
A common homeland, common traditions and culture, common history, common mentality and sense of humour, common interests, common folklore and cuisine do,among others. You have obviously have not heard of the scientific research with provedthat Cypriots have a common gene pool which is markedly different from their mainland ancestors.I suggest you do some homework on this long kept secret research

Well that my be so. But it dose'nt stop us from being Greek. What exactly is your point? That we stop thinking of ourselves as Greek and become Cypriots. We are both.

That Cypriots push their national pride first. You are a Cypriot first, your ethnic origin is Greek. Wave a Cypriot flag and be proud!!!!!

I could open up a whole can of worms and say that the first inhabitants of Cyprus were in fact from the Syria, (Chirokitia settlement) so who knows what our ethnic origin could be if we go back 1,000's of years! :)
