Eurovision farce

Postby Niki » Mon Mar 27, 2006 3:54 pm

Although the Eurovision Song Contest is not exactly 'high brow' music it can be entertaining to see the ridiculous costumes and really naff songs

However I do feel the whole event is turned into something ridiculous and political when Cyprus and Greece give each other the full 12 points - EVERY YEAR, no matter what!!!!!

It has become a standing joke.

In fact if someone will make a bet with me I'll bet that Cyprus will get 12 points from Greece and vice versa in 2006 - how about £1million?

Do you get the chance to vote or is it a government decision?

Terry Wogan is in stitches when the scoring begins. He always makes jokes about Greece and Cyprus exchanging the maximum points. :?: :?: :?: :?:

Niki if you gave me odds of 10 million to one I still would not bet a penny.

If my memory serves me correctly you can telephone your vote into a central number and the numbers are then totalled for Cyprus' results. Also, since the balkan states became independant, they too give each other the high scores.

Eurovision song contest....nil points

i dont like eurovision, especially since everybody sings in english.
the music that it is presented has nothing to do with local music.

as for regional voting.... since there are no committies deciding, and people are voting , you can just follow the voting part , and you will realise that all countries vote for the neighbours (scandinavean group, baltic group , balkans etc ) but still millions of people watch it in an attempt to make as all the same...

Former USSR countries exchange high points with each other. The same with former Yugoslavia. Scandinavians do this often. Turkey always gives high points to Bosnia... :x

Yeah you're right but Cyprus and Greece led the way years before this started.

I just think it leaves a nasty taste - it is so unecessary.

On the other hand, because the UK isn't affiliated with anyone it gets c..p points! Having said that the UK entry is useless and no doubt will 'not do very well' this year.

Terry Wogan is definately the best thing about it. He is able to take the whole event with a large pinch of salt, although I hear he has been told off a few times for his remarks.

wogan fails to mention when ireland and UK exchange 10 or 12 points each but he opens his mouth when it suits him

as for the UK, everyone hates them and their foreign policy, thats why they do jack shit every year. maybe when they stop invading countries for oil then maybe people will change their views on them. but anyway thats veering off the subject.

roll on Athens and maria menounos!! :D

savarakos

You are right about the British government - that's why I'm moving to Cyprus.

The Eurovision has become more poo-ish now the political agenda has reached such extremes.

It used to be a laugh - now it's annoying.
