saravacos , ime kipreos prota apo ola ke oxi kalamaras .If the Greeks of Greece were asked their nationality they would reply Greek. We are Greek Cypriots or Cypriot Greeks , no difference but I put the Cypriot first to ephasize my Cypriotness . If the T/C and the G/C did the same we would be half way towards resolving our problem.I believe that its is nationalistic pride directed at either Greece or Turkey that has caused so much damage to Cyprus.

Kalamaras comes from kalamari because they used to use kalamari ink to write with. It actually means "educated". The Greeks themselves started calling the educated amongst them that because they knew how to write. Xoriati means essentially a redneck or a hilly billy.

Kalamaras is the commonly used name of Greeks from Greece used by my generation , it actually means pen pusher I believe , I don't see this term as derogatory , if it offends you then you have my apology. You may call me a horiatis if you so wish I was born in a village and have nothing against the phrase " horiatis " , which loosely translated means a villager or a peasant , and although these terms tend to sound offensive I don't necessarily prescribe to this. Just to again highlight the fact that my generation , that born in the 40s , referred to Greeks from Greece as" kalamarades "
In fact I wonder if the T/Cs have a name for Turkish Turks

andri_cy,

Thaks for the explanation. If Kalamaras means educated, then I don't know why Saravakos was offended. Maybe it was an underhanded compliment, meaning he was not educated, which would explain Saravakos's displeasure. I can understand the red neck and the hill billy thing as being offensive.
