C'mon, nowhere is 100% crime free.... and criminals go on holiday in cyprus too!..... but the luggage hidden in the boot, don't leave mobile phone on display blah blah blah.... and i assume u r sensible enough to not do so in UK either!

Alternatively, since i have all the tools to open car doors in about 30 seconds without smashing the window, please let me know when & where you will be parking whilst in cyprus! Ta ;)

One think I will point out Sal is that the insurance you buy at the checkpoint is third party only --- so if there is any damage to the hire car you will have to pay  == and if it's stolen -- well you pay the cost of the car ---- it may never happen BUT you should be aware of the risks.

I've found that the natives can be a bit restless in the panhandle area and damage has been done to some cars carrying Greek Cypriot number plates.

You can have full insurance instead of thirdparty and i m sure noone will inturrupt GC rentacars (red numberplate)in the North , specially tourists.
I guarantee my life with it . 100s of tourist passing north with GC rentacars and never heard of any trouble.

Larnaka, Larnaka and Larnaka. I love Larnaka!!! Maybe not the best hotels of Cyprus are here, but 1. QUIET. 2. Location is also perfect (30 minutes and you are in Ayia Napa or Limassol or Nicosia. Beaches are nice. Most beautiful promenade of Cyprus is Phinikoudes.

Well said Serge.

After looking all round Cyprus over many years I decided that Larnaca has a lot going for it and bought a home there 12 years ago.

I've not been disappointed at all -- and as you mentioned it's central for Limassol / Nicosia and Napa and also I feel one of the beast beaches .

Exactly. And if the hire car company tell you that you cannot take your car over then it becomes part of their terms and conditions. Whatever Gav says I think you will be risking it to take the car over.
I have bought a car here and insure it to go over to the North BUT still have to pay the £10 at the crossing point. BIG CON if you ask me!

So, with 12 years of knowledge of Larnaca under your belt what would you say the most decent hotel is? Everyone here seems to rave about the Sandy Beach - is that the best?

And the best authentic Cypriot restaurant? Not just in Larnaca but anywhere on the island - I'm going to be travelling around so I'm keen to get 'real' Cyprus in the short time I'm there!
