@Alexis-

In most western countries it does not work this way around, the protection you are describing is usually no more than a written constitution and the 'law enforcement' institutions really are not the protectors of democracy at all

I see where you are coming from, but you need to recognize that the circumstances of and the threats against each country is different. Unfortunately, having borders to the most hostile region on the face of this planet that is a victim of religious fanaticism and still having fractions of the public that are extreme religious fanatics, Turkey faces a far greater threat than European countries face in terms of preserving a democratic and secular system. Today, one of the greatest perils in the face of peace and democracy in the world is religious fanaticism. For countries like UK the measure to protect themselves may be things like better inspection at airport checkpoints, but for some others like Turkey it is a little bit more demanding.

Whatever happens in Turkey, should be Turkey’s business, and we Cypriots (including Turkish Cypriots,) and our country, should not be affected or influenced! Νeither directly nor indirectly! Turkey has serious problems! It is country inhabited by fanaticized masses and ruled by equally fanaticized leaderships, be it from the side of the so-called secularists or the side of the so-called Islamists. It is a country that lacks political and democratic culture. It is a country that has never had democracy in the literal sense of the concept. It is a country that will take years and years to come at par with any other western country’s political culture and societal cohesion or integration. The more the Turkish Cypriots remain politicaly attached and under the domination and influence of such a country, the more they are doomed, and with them, the whole of Cyprus.

The sensible question that should be asked, is not what will eventually happen in Turkey, but when will the Turkish Cypriots at last decide to cut off the "umbilicus cord" that politicaly connects and ties them on the back of Turkey's tank; and come and negotiate with the Greek Cypriots, with open books; for the sake of a solution that will equally serve both communities’ legitimate interests and concerns, and a solution that will once and for good rid Cyprus from all foreign interventions and control. More specifically and importantly, a solution that will rid once and for good the Turkish Cypriot community from any mainland Turkish political and otherwise domination, control and influence.

My two cents on what is happening in Turkey at present, and how it affects or relates with Cyprus!

It is in the interests of Cyprus that Turkey gets taken over by the hard liners. In fact the further Turkey sinks the better for Cyprus… sounds terrible but it’s true. Smile

It was probably January this year when I posted on Erolz's forum…

Quote:
In a very short period of time, perhaps even before the end of this year, Turkey’s EU accession process will terminate. Do you honestly think that Turkey will be able to continue justifying occupation of EU soil given that she failed miserably to prove to Europe that she is a civilized country and of good intentions? Will Europe continue to look at Turkey in the same light once the chances of any partnership has diminished?

Think again... or is it by any accident that one country after the other are slowly but surely isolating Turkey with old wounds from the past such as Armenia? Why on earth would they suddenly dig up Armenia if there was no hidden agenda for Turkey?

Just as a matter of fact....The USA wants Turkey in the EU but certainly does not want an Islam dominated Turkey so, who do you think they are going to back. As I said to Bir and he thought I was being simplistic. Outsiders with their own interests at heart want Turkey in turmoil. Shame they have the most powerful nation on their side. Wink

Good on ya Kifeas. Does that mean that the RoC will now talk to our president and stop talking over our heads to Turkey.

haha...more like the USA is going to help create a sovereign Kurdistan and take from Turkey what always belong to the Kurds! This will only aid them in their quest for bases in the area.

Turkey is gonna slowly get carved up and is going to really feel the affects of having NO political allies whatsoever! Oh sorry, maybe Isreal...but that friendship will make Turkey only more unpopular.

What happens if there is a war in eastern Turkey and they need those 40,000 troops stationed in their occupation of north Cyprus?
