The one being discussed here:

I'm sure the Greek Orthodox lobby can set up a Facebook group to sort that one out.

What city is that exactly?

The city of Constantine or Constantinople.

If you can't even give a place a proper name, don't complain when people refer to it as its actual name.

Ok so you have analysed where the name in Turkish comes from. Great! Well done! Ain't you a clever dick.

But you know what, nobody gives a shit. People from Jakarta to San Francisco and from Cape Town to Kiruna (Sweden) call it "Istanbul." I guarantee you if you go to Seoul Airport or Zagreb Airport you will see a sign not for Constantinople but Istanbul.

If in the Greek language you want to keep it historical fine. But dont try to change English with bullshit nationalist arguments.

Well you can imagine how amazed my english pals are when I explain what the literal translation of Istanbul is in Greek and that the city was actually founded and built by the Byzantine Emporer Constantine I and and not the Turks.

It's a real eye opener for them.

So what ?

Most of the world's cities were founded by 'other people'?

Come on Ed, this is a pointless argument.

Well then I truly feel sorry for those ignorant Brits that they have a fiend like you to feed them shit, as Istanbul was built by the Romans.

And NO the Romans were not Greek

Bizairre argument!

I never once said it was built by Greeks, but thinking about it, as the Byzantines where Greeks, its safe to say that the city was probably physicallly built by Greek hands.

This Turkish extract states that Byzantium was built first by the GREEK Byzas.

I dont think for one moment that Byzas was ROMAN.

Its what it used to be called in English in the 19th century and very early 20th century, that was like 100 years ago.

Nowadays most people recognise Istanbul in the English speaking world but haven't the foggiest what Constantinople is. Why confuse them? Why raise the issue at all? Unless of course you have a nationalist agenda?

:? Even though building a Mosque there is a daft idea (to serve divisionism), building a Greek Orthodox Church is just as stupid when Catholicism is the most popular Christian denomination in the US! In fact Greek Orthodoxy doesn’t even make the top 5 Christian denominations in the US!

No you're stupid, the church (St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church) was destroyed on 911 so it's re building what was there before, get it fool. But it seems your Jewish friends (The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey) don't want to re build it!
