Where does it say amongst your links that the city was not founded by Greeks?

The Byzantine/Eastern Roman Empire (whatever you want to call it) was an empire where the Greek language and culture dominated, just like it always did in the eastern portion of the Roman Empire. Hence it became known by the nickname, "Empire of the Greeks". I don't think anybody is suggesting the Greeks conquered the lands and created this empire.

Language and culture did not dominate jack shit.

Administrative language was Greek and the Romans were just happy to let it be as opposed to Latin.

That's about it.

An Empire is a LOT more than just the ruling class, I am sure you know that.

Complete rubbish. The Greek language became dominant in the east, not only with the ruling class but with the people too, especially the educated. You only have to look at Byzantine culture, art, religion etc and you will see how pervasive the Greek influence was.

Having an "influence" hardly means, as someone back a few posts suggested, "it was literally built by Greek hands".

Don't get a head of yourselves man, nothing funnier than a Greek with a self-declared importance...

People need to study a little and understand what the holy roman empire represented in the East.

Firstly, I did not post "it was literally built by Greeks hands", so address your comments to the correct person. Secondly, I believe the person who said that was actually referring to the city of Byzantium, not the Byzantine Empire. You are confusing the two. Byzantium was founded by Greeks. So perhaps it is you who shouldn't get ahead of yourself. Nothing is funnier than a clueless Turk.

Yes and the debate here is about Istanbul's origins and where it got its name from, which was built by an Empire which the Greeks didn't have as much influence on as you wish it to be.

You really do have the tendency to barge into arguments without reading properly, don't you, you "important" Greek person

What are you talking about? Your ignorance knows no bounds. Istanbul's origins is Byzantium! Byzantium existed before the Romans ever reached the area, so how could it have been built by them?! The name issue was mentioned earlier but is not relevant to our discussion. And once again it was the Greeks who founded Byzantium!

Like I said, clueless Turk.

“The term "Byzantine Empire" is an invention of historians and was never used during the Empire's lifetime. The Empire's name in Greek was Basileia ton Rhōmaiōn (Greek: Βασιλεία των Ῥωμαίων)— "The Empire of the Romans"— a translation of the Latin name of the Roman Empire (Latin: Imperium Romanōrum); or just Rhōmania (Greek: Ῥωμανία).”

I couldn't care less whether it was called the Byzantine or Roman Empire GR. It's irrelevant. I refer to it as the Byzantine Empire because that is what it is commonly known as today to distinguish it from the earlier Roman Empire. It's funny but for most of its history the Byzantine/Roman Empire never actually included Rome.

Simon, your insistence on LINKING this empire to Greeks is a non-starter.

Use your energy elsewhere!

I don't need to link it to the Greeks, historians do that for me!

Wait, let me guess, it's all made up, right?

Keep up the great arguments GR!

P.S. If you were trying to save shah, you were too late.
