Australian troops kill 5 Afghan children

AUSTRALIAN special forces soldiers have killed five children in an attack on a compound in Afghanistan.

The tragedy has triggered a strong warning from the Afghan Government that civilian deaths are playing into the hands of the Taliban.

Afghan ambassador Amanullah Jayhoon said his Government was very concerned that the Australians had not co-ordinated the operation with Afghan security forces.

AU Troops Shell Mogadishu Market Again, Killing 11 Civilians

Following gunbattles between the African Union forces and Somali insurgents, the AU responded, as they so often have, with artillery attacks against the Bakara Market, the largest food market in Mogadishu.

At least 11 people were killed in the shelling and 20 others were said to have been wounded. Neither African Union forces nor their allies in the self-proclaimed Somali government commented on the killings, which were reported by local media. One witness claimed the attack was the “worst to even happen in the market” according to Radio Garowe.

By James Cogan

Three special forces’ commandos were charged this week by the Australian Director of Military Prosecutions (DMP) over the killing of five Afghan children on February 12, 2009, in the village of Sur Murghab, in Afghanistan’s southern province of Uruzgan.

One soldier has been charged with manslaughter or, alternatively, dangerous conduct. Another, believed to be the commander at the scene, has been charged with “failing to comply with a lawful general order”.

Australian troops kill 11 Afghan civilians

Afghan sources claims that seven women, two children and two men were killed during a raid by the Australian special forces in the Ruzgan province.

The Australian Defence Department confirmed the death of Afghans in the area but stopped short of confirming Australian soldiers were responsible for the casualties or directly involved in the January 5 incident in Oruzgan in southern Afghanistan, The Australian reports.

The raid came a day after an Australian commando, Private Greg Sher, was killed in a rocket attack.
Mohammed Dawood, who is chief of the Chora district, near where the latest incident happened, said the civilians were killed when Australian soldiers burst into a mud-walled qala (fort).

Australian soldiers fire on unarmed Iraqi civilians

After an initial airing, all mention of the shooting and possible killing of an Iraqi civilian by Australian troops late last week has disappeared from the pages of the Australian media. The incident occurred on the evening of November 5 when a “security detachment” of the Australian Defense Force (ADF) on a routine foot patrol near the Australian Embassy in Baghdad fired on a car containing two Iraqi men.

Afghanistan: Australian troops kill children, again

Five children were shot dead by Australian troops on February 12, near the village of Sarmorghab in Oruzgan province.

A February 13 defence department statement admitted the children, and an undisclosed number of other civilians, were killed, along with a "suspected insurgent".

The department promised an investigation while asserting that the Australian troops, part of the US-led force that invaded Afghanistan in 2001, were acting in "accordance with their rules of engagement".

Australian troops to be charged over Afghan children's deaths

Three Australian soldiers will face charges including manslaughter over a raid in Afghanistan that left five children dead, the chief military prosecutor said on Monday.

The court action follows an operation in February last year to clear a compound in Uruzgan province where Australian forces believed a Taliban leader was hiding.

Director of Military Prosecutions Brigadier Lyn McDade said the three "will be charged with various service offences, including manslaughter, dangerous conduct, failing to comply with a lawful general order and prejudicial conduct".
