Beyond OUR understanding.

The recent actions of Taimour Abdulwahab al-Abdaly have once again stirred the imaginations of those who have read of them and comment on the horror of them.

Whether or not the actions were either a protest about the involvement of the Swedish military forces in Afghanistan (or elsewhere) or a response to the considered insult of the 'Prophet' by an inconsiderate cartoonist, is a moot point.

What IS certain, is that the actions WERE taken by a most unlikely perpetrator. (imho)

What would compel an intelligent 29 year old family man, father of three small children, studying for a Bsc degree at the University of Bedfordshire, with his whole future before him, to commit to the actions he took?.

The terms 'Brainwashing' and 'Fanaticism' are usually employed when trying to determine the motivations behind incidents such as this, it is very easy to adopt such descriptive opinions when they are so rife in the 'Media' BUT, if one analyses the background of THIS particular perpetrator, it may well reveal that WE (those in condemnation) are actually the 'Brainwashed'.

Not an easy title to admit to I know, the death and destruction is awful and unacceptable and I am not condoning it by any means........ I merely suggest, as in the title of this thread that the 'Motives' may be beyond OUR understanding.

One does not have to be a 'Fanatic' to object to what one may perceive to be 'Unjust'.

Perhaps members might have views which may enlighten us.

When you believe in a religion that is bourne out of a medieval mindset it's easy to see why.

When a religion can convince an "intelligent" man, that in a time of war, it is their duty to slaughter infidels then the next step is to convice them that if they, a sinner, then martyr themselves by killing innocent infidels, this will offer a fast-track into paradise with 72 virgins then yes its easy to see how someone who is that way inclinded can fall for this lie.

He left 3 hungry children and a widow without a future and opted for 72 young virgins...

A bit cowardly don't you think? Took the perverted easy way out.
In fact doesn't that count as adultery? Poor guy's in for a stoning when he reaches the proverbial heavens. Allah's wrath will be upon him..

Apparently the saddo was scouring dating sites for a second wife.

Perhaps he took this desparate action because he wasn't having much luck.

A complicated and emotional topic which cannot be resolved easily, especially with "one line answers",however, we must draw a line between freedom fighters challenging the unjust AND murderers who target innocent victims.

This person almost certainly wished to harm innocent shoppers in an extremely tolerant, free thinking and open minded country- he did not "jump on a plane" and go to fight soldiers in Iraq,Palestine or Afghanistan instead he chose to "murder his way to paradise" these are the action of a deranged terrorist with radical views on Islam -
NOT someone fighting his perceived unjust enemies.

Also important to consider is the sectarian nature of Islam with violence within the shia\sunni\ahmadi\wahabi sects resulting in the deaths of thousands each year throughout the Muslim world.
OK Christianity has had the same issues but evolved ,through time, into a tolerant and (relatively) benign religion......Islam seems to be stuck in a "pre-reformation" middle ages mode.

It would be helpful if the continual reference to '72 Virgins' could be avoided, since it invites derision and COULD be the very source which instigates actions such as are discussed here.

Since 'Christianity' pre-dates the 'Mediaeval' period, perhaps the 'Mindset' was developed in opposition to the teachings which accompanied the 'Christian' tenets.

After all, Christ was crucified for introducing policies which were abhorrent to the rulers of his time, many thousands forfeited their lives (and have slaughtered many thousands of innocents) as testimony to their beliefs.

Not complicated at all.
Killing infidels is an Islamic duty.

Nothing is taken out of context.
You simply can't sugarcoat clear, direct teachings to commit murder.

It is a popular misconception that the majority of suicide bombers are impoverished, hopeless people who trade deadend lives to exit in a blaze of "glory" and enter paradise. In fact, many of the suicide bombers in Israel, the 9/11 hijackers, the wannabe Times Square bomber, the Ft. Hood shooter and others, fit a profile similar to this Swedish bomber: well educated, intelligent, usually gainfully employed, with wives and children.

Certainly, why such a person would opt to blow himself up with the obvious desire to take along with him as many innocent people as possible, is beyond my understanding. I'm only glad he failed to do more than kill himself.

And which religion do these two belong to?

If it be the 'Duty' to kill infidels (a very controversial subject) for the followers of Islam, surely there would be little need to 'Convert' so many to the faith (known to be the fastest growing of ALL religious beliefs).

As to 'Direct Teaching' to commit murder, how does one justify the 'Murderous Activities' of both the Christian and Jewish societies which preach 'Peace' yet slaughter more than ANY 'Dutiful Islamist' ?.

Or would you consider the actions of those NOT of Islam, to be operating pre-emptively?.
