if the syrian ary can take control of the situation perhaps erdogan can also be persuaded to pull back and it would avert needless loss of life. the way it has worked out it is very confusing to understand what the strategy was by the americans or even if they actually had any strategy. they caused havoc and now left assad in charge instead as the kerds have stopped fighting him. gowd help them all.

Fyi the population on both sides of the border are Kurds. With red color the Kurds living in South east Turkey

fyi - i knew that. the red in your map continues to iraq and even iran too. there must be at least 30 million kerds in the region and they have edward heath to thank for being left stateless.
i support every peoples' right to self determination no matter how small.

fyfi there is abour 3 million living in constantinoboli

ya dirla dirla da

So you knew that while claiming they were attacking Turkey all the time from Syria. Which part of Turkey the Kurdish part?
The city of Mardin that your link refers for the bomb attack is a kurdish area! Even the killed person's name was Yusuf Kurt!

Sur, does anyone remember Sur? What is it now, a Kurdish town? It was blown to bits and replaced with villas; think about that.

Indeed, Turkey is a threat to the people who live in this "safe zone", because they are Kurds, whether Turkish or Syrian, because they are not "Turks".

...two stories, yet they appear to be at odds, both reflect on Turkey's (read: Erdogan's) efforts in this regard.

Trump reckons he is about ready to destroy the Turkish economy.

He is saying that“Turkey’s action {in Syria} is precipitating a humanitarian crisis and setting conditions for possible war crimes,”

There will be an imposition on current and former government officials.

He is also going to put tariffs on steel up by 50% and stop negotiations for a $100 Bn trade deal with Turkey.

Last time Donald put tariffs on steel at these levels, the lira crashed hard by 20%. Inflation also went 5 times what the average rate is for wealthy nations.

This sent the economy in to a frenzy and the central bank had to aggressively hike interest rates to try and keep it under control.

Will these measures be enough to destroy the Turkeys economy? Who knows, but Turkish savers might eventually find solace with a 40% interest rate from their bank. :o

So now the US has "withdrawn" from Syria.

Leaving the Russian backed Syrian army and the US backed Kurds to repel the Turks.

Reports coming in from elsewhere are also saying that 10's of thousands of Iranian militia have entered Syria to help them fwart the Turkish assault.

Erdogan will probably make like a fugitive
or bolt up in his palatial bunker with one round in the chamber
or stand trial in the Hague and end up back in prison.

The people and political parties of Turkey will be left carrying the bag.

They might possibly reach unprecedented levels of poverty and end up fighting among themselves and the Syrian refugees.

Excellent article,

Basically sums things up for turkey.

Ankara’s revolting euphemisms, bogus arguments and pipe dreams.

So this was the trap after all.
The Turks reached a level of extreme arrogance a long time ago.
Question is, was it really necessary to have nearly 300,000 people displaced and so many hundreds dead, just to impose those stupid sanctions?
It really puzzles me. More sanctions coming from the EU in a week...

Also this saga that the Turks were supposedly trying to create a safe zone at their borders, when clearly the majority of population on both sides of the border at a depth of more than 50Km are Kurds. Turkey just wants to ethnic cleanse the Kurds as a whole, that's what she was doing from the 80s-90s at south east Turkey, and that's what she is trying to do now outside her borders.

The lira will exceed 2018's lows soon enough and inflation will become rampant. prematurely lowering interest rates will come back to bite the economy hard. The central bank will probably have to give it all back and then some. Erdogan will oppose it and fire the central bank governor again.

If it was bad last year in Turkey, next year is going to be a whole lot worse.

Cities full of people will be going to soup kitchens and looting the place just to survive.
