More than 1,000 barristers have signed a letter to the prime minister urging him to allow parliament to decide whether the UK should leave the European Union.

The letter describes the referendum result as only advisory because it was based on “misrepresentations of fact and promises that could not be delivered”.

The barristers argue that there must be a free vote in parliament before article 50 of the EU’s Lisbon treaty can be triggered – paving the way for the UK’s withdrawal.

One of the points made in the above letter:

For all of these reasons, it is proposed that the government establishes, as a matter of urgency, a royal commission or an equivalent independent body to receive evidence and report, within a short, fixed timescale, on the benefits, costs and risks of triggering article 50 to the UK as a whole, and to all of its constituent populations. The parliamentary vote should not take place until the commission has reported.

Shouldn't they have done that and published it before having a referendum?

Well, there was a report on BBC's Today radio programme a couple of days ago from Sunderland, a place with a very high 'leave' vote, and the people asked to explain why they voted so all said, "There are too many ****** foreigners in the country" or words to that effect. Presuming that the BBC was giving us a representative sample of the replies (and I have my doubts about that), then people thought they knew what they were voting about. Shame that the question on the ballot paper was actually a different one!

I agree with you ....... that has to be a first?  This should have been the basis of Cameron's Plan 'B' and his 'remain' campaign, instead of relying on scare tactics.

Leadsom has dropped out of the Conservative leadership race so May has become Prime Minister by default.

Do you not think there was an onus on the 'leave' campaign to present some kind of programme as to what was to happen if their campaign was victorious and, indeed, on the electorate that was considering supporting it to demand one?

I think the point whatsisname has been making Tim is that the Leave camp weren't in a position to make any sort of such plans. It was the duty of the incumbent government to use the organs of State at their disposal in order to contingency plan for a possible exit vote. They didn't. A reflection of the PM's hubris. Negligence - in extremis.

Let's not forget what triggered this whole thing. It was Camoron's (that's not a spelling mistake) returning from Brussels having "renegotiated" and declaring that he could campaign "heart and soul" (peace in our time) for staying in. Who remembers that now? That's what precipitated the vote. In or out depending upon the extent of your acceptance.

The reality of course is that he went to the EU naked. They knew that he'd painted himself into a corner and whatever they gave - or didn't give - him that's the way he was going to fall. There was never any way that Camoron was going to recommend a vote to leave. It was clearly inconceivable. Both Camoron and the Commission screwed up in that respect.
