Here’s a bunch of things I reckon are far more urgent than our bad driving...

* The proliferation of gay phone ownership.
* Grivas’ death anniversaries.
* The surge in drug use and drug related crime.
* The surge in refugee arrivals and issues.
* APOEL’s penalty gifts.

My own observations are based on personal experience reaching the conclusion that most Cypriot drivers have no fucking road sense. Suitably qualified to ride donkeys.

I agree that roundabouts take top prize. I’ve seen a lot of shunts on them, with the usual sequence of events - car in front waits to get onto the roundabout - sees a chance and goes for it, only to change their mind. Car behind sees him move and, whilst looking right piles into the front car’s boot. 8)

Opinions, opinions, opinions.

All based on our subjective and self declared expectations or standards.

But here are the facts.

The European commission’s annual accident report 2018 states.

Denmark is the safest place to drive in the EU, reporting just five accidents per 10,000 residents annually.

Cyprus comes in close second, with 7.5 accidents per 10,000 residents,

followed by Finland with 8.5.

France and Poland make up the rest of the top five, with 8.6 and 8.9 accidents per 10,000 residents respectively.

Therefor despite any quirks and peculiarities, only in our minds, Cyprus is one spot away from being the safest place to drive in Europe.

Congratulations to Cyprus, perhaps Cyprus should send instructors to the other EU members states to teach their residents how to drive.

I think you're being very selective with the stats. Can you post a link to them?

If you look at the earlier chart I posted - Fig 2 of the EU's annual report, showing fatalities - it tells a different story.

I don't get as excited as Milti about the subject and regard the driving habits here as a quintessential part of Cypriot culture (so, no need to play the race card - again) but I think that anybody who denies what goes on either doesn't actually go out on the roads everyday or has his head firmly stuck in the sand. The idea that it's comparatively safe to drive here is a fantasy. Then again, a lot of ridiculous fantasies are po-faced argued about in here.

Whatever goes on or whatever anybody thinks about it, the number of accidents and fatalities have been declining in Cyprus consistently since 2007.

Cyprus is the second safest place to drive in Europe.

These are the facts. Everything else is just opinion.

I translate that to the fact that because our roads and towns so overpopulated drowning in huge traffic, the Cypriots trained themselves to be the most skilled drivers.

That is one valid and positive way to look at it.

Just because

> some dont indicate,
> some park like baboons which forces others to park like baboons
> some drink or eat while driving
> some use mobile phones while driving
> some might be seen with a kid or pets in their lap or hanging out the window while driving.
> some park in the opposite direction and on the other side of the road.
> some dont stop exactly on the line they are supposed to, when they are supposed to.
> or something else

It does not mean Cyppriots are bad drivers because this doesn't result in more accidents or fatalities. The fact is that despite any negative opinion, accidents and fatalities are declining.

Simply put, Cypriots are so good at driving, they can do all of this and still maintain safer roads.

This also explains why insurance premiums are low in Cyprus.

Theft, accidents and fatalities are low, so the probability of payout from the insurance company for any claim is low.

Actuaries make their decisions on how to price insurance premiums based on real numbers, probabilities and facts.

if the roads in Cyprus were unsafe, if the insurance companies had a higher risk of payout, then premiums would be higher than what they are.

Which they are not. Motor Insurance is cheap in Cyprus.
