''As for the Turkish proposal, a senior Israeli official said that while improving relations with Ankara was a welcome development, any proposal that comes at the expense of Cyprus is a non-starter. “Cyprus is an ally of Israel and the maritime border between the countries is recognized by the United Nations and European Union,” the official explained.''

Borrell tells Cavusoglu that intentions and announcements need to be translated into actions
CNA - Athanasios Athanasiou - Belgium/Brussels 21/01/2021 15:40

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell has said that intentions and announcements need to be translated into actions, speaking ahead of a meeting today with Turkish Foreign Affairs Ministrer Mevlut Cavusoglu. Borrell also referred to a UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres initiative for the resumption of Cyprus reunification talks, noting that the EU is "fully committed to support a speedy resumption of negotiations in line with relevant UN Security Council resolutions."

In statements ahead of the meeting, Borrell said he was "pleased to welcome here at the headquarters of the EEAS my colleague and friend, Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu.

(CNA)

...Borell continues to be a representative aware of the real issues. It is indeed intentions which Turkey continues to demonstrate as disruptive behaviour, which count.

US and Turkey on course for diplomatic, economic collision
https://www.ekathimerini.com/261589/opi ... -collision

...a very well written commentary, worth reading.

Hope, because there is a man in the White House who remembers, and who cares.

That is only the tip of the iceberg. Turkish warplanes and naval vessels threaten Kastellorizo, and Turkey now lays claim to Crete’s waters. Turkish and Turkish-backed forces also invaded and have ethnically cleansed Syria’s Afrin district, and they have effectively annexed other towns in northern Syria. In Iraq, Turkish warplanes bomb Yezidi villagers in the Sinjar district, a region already traumatized by the Islamic State. Turkey has also sent Syrian mercenaries, including some associated with Al Qaeda and the Islamic State, into Libya and Azerbaijan, and has used its own special forces to fight Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh. Erdogan openly questions the legitimacy of the Lausanne Treaty. Simply put, Erdogan’s hostility to his neighbors’ sovereignty and the post-World War II liberal order puts him in the company of Vladimir Putin and Slobodan Milosevic rather than any European democratic leader. As Turkey’s economy flounders, Erdogan will likely only ratchet up both his polemics and aggression to distract Turks from the disaster that has been his economic stewardship.

The Problem, indeed has grown to be much larger, than Cyprus.

...India links Turkey to their hypocrisy in Cyprus,

...while Erdogan speaks to his electorate, impressing them, the world sees things differently.

One Hopes that Erdogan's Turkey "will defend the Turkish Cypriots’ rights to the end", as he says.

...and what of the "Cypriot Turks" who are so dependent on him for their own existence?

Turks and Greeks have only to stand as one, the People, in Cyprus, to give him Hope.

...what is the Problem? "Greekness" or, "Turkishness"? They are the same. Such as it is, today, "Greekness" has been defeated, while Turkey has never been more divided, because such dogmas exclude those who are not "them". Erdogan knows this, and he may choose again to board the train he calls "Democracy"; a BBF in Turkey is not anathema to a Caliphate existing in Istanbul. He knows this too.

...while the political elite in Cyprus continue to defend themselves (personally), it seems more a malaise affecting this class of people around the world. But i am hopeful. Such a man as Erdogan may choose, and with a small change in intentions he may find the tarnish staining Turkey's presence removed. In effect, Turkey cannot be "Turkish", just like Cyprus cannot be "Greek"; they are States, based on Universal Principals which defend our Individual Equality. Such as it is he has two years to make this kind of History, in time for Turkey's Centennial.

...indeed, at another level of government, as Constituencies, both countries would be better off having them.

The question remains, will Cypriots have "Picnics" (before his arrival), i hope so; will Erdogan (again)?

I have not read this but I suspect it missed the whole point of the war against RoC, who started it and also when?

https://rsf.org/en/news/northern-cyprus ... -passports

...allegedly, 500,000 passports are intended to be sold, so that "Turkishness" may truly create the conditions where Cypriots are a much smaller minority.

Pretty cheap a so called TRNC Passports, only 1250 EU each.

...maybe i should have posted this news in the topic about elections in the occupied territories, but clearly, it also fits here.
