Police have been encouraged to consider disclosing the ethnicity and nationality of suspects charged in high-profile cases, after facing mounting pressure over the details they make public.

The interim guidance from the National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC) aims to reduce the risk to public safety where there are high levels of misinformation about an incident.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper welcomed the guidance as a "step forward", adding that the government and the public want "greater transparency".

Three children have been charged with the murder of a man who was found dead on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent. There are laws forbidding the details of minors (under 18) allegedly involved in criminal activities being revealed by the press prior to the completion of any associated legal proceedings. Or, at the discretion of a presiding judge.

The decision regarding not revealing the status of adult alleged/convicted offenders is a political one.

Some idiot was on the airways this morning suggesting rather than paying 700 million to the French Government to stop the boats, they should pay 10,000 pounds to each policeman who punctures a small boat. This is a reference to when they reported that a policeman had punctured a small boat to stop it crossing. As per usual they got it wrong. The boat developed a puncture and the police were there helping the people inside the boat to escape.
