GPS devices

Postby Leonidas » Sun Feb 26, 2006 9:53 pm

I know I know, somewhere in here there was a thread about this I just could not find it. LOL

Anyway, I just got me the new Garmin pocket GPS.
Garmin nüvi 350 WAAS-Enabled GPS Receiver with 3.5" Color Touch Screen Model: 010-00455-00

Somewhere in all the paperwork I got it mentioned that is worldwide capable. For the US version it covers North America, but one can get a sdram for it , loaded for different regions of the world. Also it has language translators etc etc.

Just thought this may be what you where looking for.

You can look at it at
www.bestbuy.com
Was $899.00

I have also the Magellan RoadMate 760 WAAS-Enabled GPS Receiver with Color LCD Touch Screen which also it has European option. But it is bulcky and requires to be attached to power all the time to operate unlike the Garmin which has an internal up to 8 hr battery.

The problem is not finding the device. The problem is finding a street map of Cyprus to put in that device. Without the map the device would just show your coordinates which is not very helpful. :(

A small country like Cyrpus should not be hard to do it.
With all the tourists we get there we should be a great candidate for GPS sales.
Maybe contacting the right people could help?

Some people said they already did it: http://www.cyprus-forum.com/viewtopic.php?t=3738 but I am not sure I believe them. It seems a bit like vaporware...

I don t know about that either Soto.
On Garmin's side it does not show an SC CARD option JUST for Cyprus. They do show Greece but that's the closest to us.

If someone did the topo then I don t see why Garmin or Magelan can not sell their SD cards with it.
It s money for them. With all the Europeans that travel to Cyprus I m sure it will worth it.
I would pay for one for Nicosia alone. Heck I get lost in Dherynia and Ayia Napa now.

I have a Garmin Vista which I purchased 2 years ago, I've got a lot of remote petrol stations logged in it which are very handy when out in the mountains on my bike, it'sa also handy as a superb trip computer, but that's about it.

When I purchased it I thought of getting a much more expensive model so contacted Garmin directly as asked them if there were and plans to make maps of Cyprus... They stated clearly that at the time there were NO PLANS TO ELECTRONICALLY MAP CYPRUS.

Usually for small countries like cyprus which road maps are not that important for commerce there is no real justification of the investment required to electronically map the roads and towns. However there are amazingly detailed sea charts which have some detail for cyprus (e.g. villages/towns and some points of interest, that is how I found fontana moroza at akamas!), they are the blue charts that garmin makes.

Guys, as reading your comments above I realised that you are inot GPS devices....and I need your help! My dad needs a portable GPS to use it while walking around the mountains etc. He is not into these gismos neither do I, yet... He needs altimeter, compass, and the ability to export (or import) any coordinate points from/to his pc. I've found out that Magellan and Garmin are the known makes... Which models would you recommend? I'm been to their websites and I'm a bit confused. I think I do not need the mapping feature as Cyprus is not electronically mapped and any CDs with maps covering Cy are not detailed enough to be purchased. It has to be fairly cheap though!
