Indeed I have also observed the name calling and can be frustrating when you hear it all the time.

My father employs a sri lankan to do the Gardening and I shout to him when he does not pay him according on the effort he put in but based on the cash on his wallet.

Good for you. Maybe the newer generation can make a difference? 8)

If only they can listen!

There are ignorant people who have been used to act the way the used to without any effort to change something. Also these ignorant people become ARROGANT not because they want to but because they lack information or/and common sense or to see things in a different angle. I accept what you and others have experienced and I have also observed these myself.

If you do not have a real strategy you will get lost in the Crowd!

well im also an english cypriot, and i know what you talking about. Now why are they hostile towards us my opinion is that we know alot more about the world than they do but the trouble when working with cypriots or mixing with them our worldly knowlege shines through and they take it the wrong way , and think that we see ourselfs superior but of course we do not think that we are ,we are just slightly diferent as we have expirienced life in another country and are more open minded.

How do you know that you know more about the world than 'they' do? And how do you know that 'they' think that you see yourself as superior?
You say your "worldly knowledge shines through". In the context of your remark, it sounds as if you do see yourself as superior and perhaps you are getting a reaction to that. I don't think that experiencing life in another country, necessarily makes one more open-minded.

It goes back to making assumptions about others' experiences. Some people are just difficult to deal with and will be regardless of where they been. But I think the 'us' versus 'them' perpetuates the ignorance.

I can't see things in terms of 'them' or 'us'. 'Them' and 'us' is a politician's ploy and a big reason why Bush has place the US in the terrible position we are in in the world, in political and military terms.

English Cypriots in Cyprus

Postby miltiades » Mon Apr 17, 2006 12:28 pm

The very large majority of Greek Cypriots , including my self , emigrated to the Uk and to other mostly English speaking countries for predominately the same reasons that all migrants , human and otherwise , did so for centuries. To search for greener pastures , for better
economic conditions , and for Free education , as the case was in the UK during the 50s and 60s. In Cyprus during British rule education above the age of 12 had to be paid for.
Many of us Anglo Cypriots assumed , quite wrongly in my opinion , that
the improvement of our financial levels meant that our thinking levels also changed , and this could not be further from the truth. We remained buried in the past, nothing at all wrong with this, perfectly natural.
Our culture , history , family values, notions of happiness and fullfilment
are the same as that of our fellow brothers and sisters that we so often in a derogatory way we call KIPREI , as if to say we are not.Our fellow Cypriots suffered a great deal. We did not. Please let us not be overcritical of our fellow Cypriots who by remaining behind during difficult times have given us a modern outward looking Cyprus to enjoy.

Miltiades I consider myself lucky as I had parents to support me financially to study in UK at those days. Being in UK helped me to see the world in a different perspective and to become more fairer minded person. This is the reason I consider UK as my second home When I go abroad I go to UK and nowhere else ! Regards

UK Is A GREAT COUNTRY!

Mihalis i couldnt agree with you more UK WAS A GREAT COUNTRY. Take a close look today and see what the political nonsence of multi- culturerism , political correctness , denegration of western world values , removal of all Englishness from public life , Banks refusing to display Xmas decorations as not to offend !!!
Coupled with all these nonsense we have Ken as a mayor of London.
I tell you Mihalis the country is not what it used to.My wife who was born in London , of English parents being English herself agrees with me 100%.
Regards , and please email me the next time you are in the UK.

I consider myself lucky as well. I was born in the US to an American mother and German father, spent the first eight years of life in Germany, ten years in the US, then studied for two years in the UK. I have been fortunate enough to travel all over. I believe that my experiences have definitely broadened me. At the same time, alot has changed and continues to change as the EU enlarges, globalisation takes place, and people begin to migrate. Unfortunately this brings along an increase in incidents that are racial, ethnic, and religious in nature. I see changes everywhere and a alot of strife.
