SOMEONE EXPLAIN!

Postby littlemiss » Fri Apr 14, 2006 12:07 pm

Hi all,
Please please please, someone explain.......................... what is the the deal with the cypriots not liking the english cypriots? I know alot has happened in the past but not sure what exactly has triggered this dislike. Call me thick but can some one just explain the details.
Reasons for my asking....... My husband is Cypriot but was born and "bred" in england ( not his choice, but his parents ), so we are both living here now in cyprus and he is noticing the hostility to english cypriots with names such as Charlie! He feels a little betrayed by his own here. If he lives in the UK he is foreign and if he lives here he is foreign, but this is his real home right? Come on guys enlighten me here. xx

Not sure what the answer is, but I too feel this hostility once in a while.

No longer worries me though. If someone gives you grief, just tell them to kiss your ass and move on your merry way.

Typical island mentality I guess

Take it easy littlemiss. "Charlie" is just a funny nick name. Nothing more. We call people from Greece Kalamaraes etc. But remember: to be Cypriot you have to act like one. ;)

Thanks Sotos but charlie for fun is ok but when combined with other words like so what are you then one of us or a Charlie it is intended as an insult? When he has the same blood. So no one knows why the hostility then? Its just something english cypriots have to put up with?

i come from a village and in the past i believed that most english cypriots were arrogant snobs. i got that idea mostly from my peers, not by my interaction with them. thats what my friends believe so thats what i believed as well. eventually i developed the capability of thinking for myself and therefore saw that there is nothing threatening or wrong about english cypriots. some of them are allright some are not -just like regular cypriots. we are a bit behind in accepting anything foreign or different. (and thats probably an understatement). i believe all cypriots should go and live in another country for awhile, and be exposed to other cultures. i know it helped me a bit, and now i think i prefer the company of english cypriots, i think they have interesting views on things...

hostility? what exactly have they done to you? Because they called you a name that you consider inappropriate you consider this as a hostile attitude!

Hi Michalis

I think it goes way beyond, being called a nickname.

It is strange really, many English Cypriots are only that becasue they were forced to leave Cyprus becasue of the invasion. Maybe it is the fear of something/someone different...but I am sure the hostility exists.

its not a funny nick name...i'm sick to death of locals gettin on my case for no other reason just because i live in england.

for some reason they think we're better off living over here. maybe the locals would like to swap and see how hard it is.

this is one of the main reasons i wont be going back to cyprus any time soon even though i love the place. Greece is so much friendlier

Hello Svetlana,

Hostility to me sounds a strong word to describe just the name calling. This is the reason I asked the question in the first place. I dont deny that there might be insidence of hostility but overgeneralising like all cypriots are hostile individuals is beyond my understanding!

Thanks
