As a matter of routine there are always 2 X Ohio SSBNs on patrol. Each carrying 24 Trident D3 missiles with 96 warheads. They have a range of about 12000kms and - wait for it are - “supersonic!” Not only that but they use sophisticated methods of decoying to confuse defences. Trust me - and as the Russians who matter well know - most of them would get through.

They can reach Russia from just about anywhere on the planet, even US territorial waters, quicker than we could get a Uber. Just like the Russian equivalents can reach the US/UK, anywhere.

There’s a contingency plan allowing for a retaliatory strike after a major attack on the US and loss of Command comms.

After that, and a billion or so dead outright, the unlucky ones in the Northern hemisphere would wander around in semi-darkness killing each other for the remaining scraps of food, whilst billions around the world die excruciatingly slowly from starvation and radiation poisoning. This is the scenario Mr GR has fervently wished for on numerous occasions.
