This was made very clear during the Malvinas war when the reporters openly said this. One report actually said "I am not allow to say how many but I counted them out and I counted them back in, all returned" referring to aircraft.

...but the origins of this war occurs much before Maidan; it is (still) about Russia's desires to maintain hegemony over natural resources, (and "Russia's" corruption in the Ukraine).
